Book Lonely Planet Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands (Travel Guide) Review :

The only reason I’m not giving it one star is because I only used it for Quito and surrounding highlands. Maybe the other sections are better. Am I the only traveler tired of twenty somethings lecturing me? The book is amazingly devoid of useful information for its writers to claim they’ve lived or even visited extensively. They also have extremely poor taste in food. I went to half their best restaurants. One low-end but near a beautiful church we weren’t served (cafĂ© modelo) I’m guessing because we were Norte americanos, two beautiful view (mosaico) but absolutely mediocre food and a young persons hangout where couples did everything but copulate, thee high end (Zazu) where again we weren’t served until I spoke to a manager but which prepared wonderfully delicious food. Also Ecuador clearly has a crime problem “not like everywhere”. Hotels in old town all locked their doors after ocho por la noche. My gf got robbed in the famous Otavalu market.Despite the poor advice we had a great time, Ecuador is a beautiful country and Quito a great Latin American city and the people in general as friendly as anywhere. Highly recommend it but pick another guide book
One of the ways I judge a travel guide is by the index. A skimpy index makes it MUCH less useful because people don't necessarily know what "region" a place is in -- but they've heard a name. How to look it up? Ridiculous in the computer age because an index would be SO easy to compile. Case in point: Cuyabeno, a well known and very large wildlife reserve and the region itself is known as the Cuyabeno. Where did I finally find it? In the Rs under Reserva Production Faunistica Cuyabeno, the Spanish name. Great! That's very helpful. Not. nothing in the Cs of course. Really? So on to other stuff. I buy Lonely Planet guides often because of the maps. They have great town maps which place hotels/hostels and restaurants. In general they're better at that than some of the other companies. This guide was OK at that. But judging this guide from the previous Lonely Planet Ecuador guide, outdated by now, it doesn't measure up. Many instances of incomplete information like in the "getting there and away" section for one place we're heading to it lists how to get back from there but not how to get there. Umm... Also, they didn't seem to be up to speed about how guides are managed in the Galapagos now -- by the Park service. So, though we are going to keep it and take it with us, we'd have bought a different company's guide had there been one as current as this. Oh, also, the key to their shorthand on the first part of a listing for lodging is nowhere to be found. I do not know what some of those little icons are supposed to mean. Guess I'll find out when I'm there... As I said, I'm disappointed in this.
